Tight harmonies and musicianship that is second to none give the Kris Karr Band a personality all its own. If you haven't seen this group perform, then you really haven't lived.

The seasoned five-piece band mixes original music and covers, making it one of the area's most desired acts. Needless to say, we are lucky to have Kris' band playing the second night of our reunion. Please tip them liberally!

The performance starts at 8 p.m. on Sat., Aug. 4. Crickets is located at 512 Central Avenue, Fort Dodge. This is a free event. All you have to do is show up!

Kris always brings a crowd, and along with our expected turnout of 100-plus classmates, you'll want to arrive early.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2444469756198190834.post-85913397462834276642018-07-08T21:40:00.000-07:002018-07-08T22:30:49.091-07:00Brutal Republic Set to Get the Party Started

<span style="font-family: "helvetica";">It’s time to hear from you. What have you been doing
the last 40 years and how did Fort Dodge Senior High help shape your life?

<span style="font-family: "helvetica";">Our directory/database is ready for your
entries. The site’s address is fdsh1978alum.com. But you will need to get the User
Name and Password first.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica";">How do you obtain this information? Send and
email with your name as it appeared in the high school yearbook in the subject
line.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica";">The email address: FortDodge1978 (at) gmail.com.
Remember to replace the (at) with @ and remove the spacing. (We do this to
prevent bots from gathering the email and spamming the address.)

<span style="font-family: "helvetica";">Note that your email will be added to the
directory/database containing your yearbook mugshot and our FortDodge1978 address
book unless you request otherwise. Once verified, you will receive the User Name and Password for the site.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica";">Again, this is done for security reasons.
The User Name and Password are meant only for classmates, so please do not
share. We value your privacy and if the site is compromised, we will
change the User Name and Password and notify all verified members by email.
That’s another reason we need your email.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica";">What else can be included? We urge that you
write a bio about your life after Senior High, and if you wish, a physical
mailing address. Neither is required, but the more classmates who include bios
will add to the wealth of the site. Write as much or little as you want. It’s
the Internet and there are no space constraints. Only the administrator can add information so yes, you have to email it in.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica";">If you want to get the User Name and Password
and get a feel for the site before writing a bio, we’re down with that. If you
need an example bio, please check the entry for Jay Christensen. It’s the only bio on the site as of this posting.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica";">The site is easy to navigate and you can click a letter under “Categories” or type a name into the “Search” field. We’ve
also included links to the website and Facebook pages along with
an email link. There’s also a “Home” link, which takes you back to the entry
page.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica";">We have gone to an online directory/database
for two reasons. First, it eliminates the costs of printing a program. Second,
the directory/database is fluid and can be updated if you decide to make
changes or — heaven forbid — if the administrator somehow screws something up,
highly unlikely as that might be….

<span style="font-family: "helvetica";">There are 464 classmates on the site. The
administrator reserves the right to hassle membership from time to time to
add bios and assumes no responsibility to the accuracy of any information (legal disclaimer).

<span style="font-family: "helvetica";">The structure is in place, so let’s fill it up! And encourage others
to do so. If this works as planned, it’s going to be rad. I have enormous faith
in all the classmates!

<span style="font-family: "helvetica";">If you have any questions, post them below or
send an email.

Our 40-year high school class reunion will be held Aug. 3-4, 2018. The plan calls for a loose gathering on Friday, the 3rd for those who arrive early, with the official get-together on Saturday, the 4th. Both events are informal (no program or speeches) and will feature live music, food and access to adult beverages for those who wish to imbibe. Our goal is to keep this a relaxed and affordable fun-filled event.

Within the coming months we will release more details. We have also created a Facebook page to augment this site.

The journey starts here and most important, the journey begins with you! We will need your help in tracking down classmates as we work to build a secure online database (password protected) that will be available only to members of the class. The database will include email addresses (required) and address and phone numbers for those who wish to provide it. Your privacy is important!

Most important, we have a date and a plan in place. Start spreading the word!

First, the news that directly impacts our class. There will be no reunion this year for the Class of 1978. Word has come down that our next reunion will be in the summer of 2018, which will mark our 40th year of freedom from the halls of Fort Dodge Senior High.

That doesn't mean this summer is reunion-free. The Class of 1977, which missed its 35th, is holding one for its 36th. It's happening on Aug. 9-11, and the centerpiece of the festivities will take place on Saturday, the 10th, with a gathering at the Community Tap at 7 p.m.

I'm sure the good folks from 1977 wouldn't mind if a few hanger-ons from the 1978 class were to show up and reminisce about the good, old days.

Here's what it looks like from the air, thanks to this photo by the Messenger's Dana Recker that was taken from the plane of Dean Getting.

This is part of a nearly $1.9 million fundraising effort to update the facility, which basically hasn't been touched since it was built in 1939-40. You can click here to read Eric Pratt's story about the renovation project. And there is a spirited discussion going on about the field at the end of this link.

Pratt also wrote a piece in favor of a proposed aquatic center. This excerpt:

"I owe Fort Dodge. I've lived here for the better part of 20 years. I went to school here. I work here. I met my wife here. My son was born here.

"As I get older, my sense of civic responsibility grows. I don't feel like it's up to me, as a voter, to pick and choose projects based on my own personal interests. Instead, I try to make decisions that will help strengthen our collective future."Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2444469756198190834.post-8887206782166536802008-06-27T14:14:00.000-07:002008-06-27T21:07:11.845-07:00Anybody Taking Photos This Weekend?Unfortunately, your loyal webmaster is stuck in California and won't be able to attend the festivities this weekend because of a conflict with something called work. Unfortunately, some of the buildings are gone, leaving only a vacant lot. In the case of Pleasant Valley, a church occupies the property.

We begin with a look at Senior High, built in 1958 and still going strong:North Junior High, now Phillips Middle School. Hearing the news brought back memories of the tornado that struck Fort Dodge in 1977, our junior year.

But the twister that hit Parkersburg and continued on to New Hartford and Dunkerton was unlike any other. This was a monster storm, rated an F5 — the largest on the Fujita Scale — by the National Weather Service. The twister at times was more than a mile wide and packed winds of 205 miles per hour. It stayed on the ground for 43 miles. Sadly, seven people lost their lives in what was the second-deadliest tornado in Iowa history.

The devastation was unlike anything I've witnessed. Half of Parkersburg (population 2,000) was gone. This little jewel of a city on the Iowa prairie looked like a war zone. Words and pictures don't begin to capture the destruction.

There are so many stories to tell, but the spirit of Iowans in times like this remains unmatched. Every town seemingly had sent help — from rescue and clean-up crews to fire personal. There was Cedar Falls and Charles City (site of Iowa's deadliest tornado in 1968). There was Waverly and Williamsburg. And yes, there was Fort Dodge.

If you're interested in helping in some way, click on this link maintained by radio station KLMJ/KQCR in Hampton. The station's general manager happens to be former Fort Dodger Craig Donnelly and the station has been doing a terrific job updating the recovery efforts in Parkersburg.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2444469756198190834.post-35234542606674922282008-06-02T19:04:00.000-07:002008-06-02T19:09:57.134-07:00The Class of 1978 in 1998
Check it out! Check out this poster — believed to be a reproduction — promoting Buddy Holly's appearance at the Laramar on Jan. 30, 1959, only three days before his death in the crash of a Beechcraft Bonanza near Clear Lake.

Also on the fatal flight with Holly were J.P. Here is part of the entry:

"Fort Dodge (pop. 28,000) had come under the intense scrutiny of health officials after a mysterious virus spread rapidly through the city in November. As many as two thousand Fort Dodge residents had been stricken with the virus, which caused nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. A team of federal health officials descended on the city in January in an all-out effort to determine the source of the virus.

"When it was discovered that the pet dog in many families was stricken with similar symptoms, the Iowa state veterinarian was dispatched to the city to take case histories of the sick dogs.

"The Winter Dance Party bus with its balky heater slipped through the winter darkness in temperatures in the low teens and with two inches of freshly fallen snow on the ground, en route to a concert in a city full of sick people and dogs.

"The bus was late arriving in Fort Dodge. 'We were worried,' says Dick Derrig, an assistant manager at the Laramar Ballroom.

"Bob Geer, fifteen-year-old son of Laramar owner Larry Geer, remembers the group's arrival. 'They had a bus that smelled bad. I'm sure it was no fun traveling on.'
